What a Google Business Profile actually is - and why it matters

The free listing that decides who gets the call, and the fields most owners never touch.

FF The FirstFind team

Search for a plumber, a dentist, or a coffee shop and Google shows the same thing first: a map, and a short list of nearby businesses with ratings, photos, and a phone number. Each entry on that list is a Google Business Profile - and if you run a local business, you already have one, whether you claimed it or not.

The free listing most owners never touch

Your profile is the panel that appears when someone searches your business name: hours, phone number, reviews, photos, directions. Google builds one for every business it knows about. Claiming it is free and takes minutes - yet most owners set it up once and never look at it again.

That matters because for local searches, your profile - not your website - is your first impression. Most customers decide right there: they call, tap directions, or keep scrolling. Many never open a website at all.

What it decides

  • ✓Whether you appear at all when someone searches for what you do
  • ✓What people see when they compare you against the businesses beside you
  • ✓Whether they call you or the competitor with more recent reviews
  • ✓What AI search tools say when someone asks for a recommendation
The bottom line

An unclaimed or half-empty profile doesn't make you look bad - it makes you invisible. The businesses ranking above you aren't necessarily better. Their profiles are.

Where to start

  • ✓Claim your profile at google.com/business if you haven't already
  • ✓Check your hours, phone number, and address are exactly right
  • ✓Pick the category that matches what customers actually search for
  • ✓Add real photos of your work, your team, and your premises
